김나연은 본다는 행위가 자아의 결과임에 주목하며 지각을 통해 형성된 자아가 다시 지각에 어떤 작용을 하는지를 탐구한다. 이번 전시에서는 기존의 인체지형도 작품에 다시 새로운 시리즈를 제작하며 작품의 완성과 과정에 의문을 던진다.
Nayeon Kim explores on how the action of looking is a conscious choice and the interplay between identity and the self. In this exhibition, she produces new series of the Body Topographic Map to question the process and the finalisation of the artwork.
학창시절 나는 뇌출혈로 많은 가족을을 떠나보냈다. 그 경험으로 나는 내가 살아있다는 것에 미시감을 느꼈다. 내가 바라 보는 것이 사실 눈이 보는 것이 아닌 내 머릿속에서 보는 것이고, 몸의 모든 감각은 결국 몸이 아닌 내 머릿속에 있었다. 나의 몸은 내가 마주하는 모든 것을 감각하며 자아를 형성한다. 내가 마주하는 모든 것이 자아를 형성하지만, 동시에 '본다.'는 행위는 자아의 결과이다. 몸의 감각은 자아를 형성하고 다시 자아는 몸의 감각을 재구성한다. 감각이란 몸이 외부 자극을 있는 그대로 수용하는 것이 아닌 자아의 끊임없는 활동이다. 나는 인체 지형도 작업을 통해 디지털 사진 속 시각 아이러니를 드러내고, 지각을 통해 형성된 자아가 다시 지각에 어떤 행위를 어떤 영향을 주는가에 대한 탐구를 통해 몸과 자아의 관계를 알아보고자 했다.
I was still a student, when some of my family members passed away with a stroke. Ever since that experience, I had a strong sense of 'Jamais vu' that I’m still alive. What I reckon I see, actually happens inside my head and so does the other senses of my body. My body senses whatever I face and becomes part of myself. Everything I look at forms part of my identity but at the same time, it is my consciousness which makes me look at something. The senses become part of myself and again my consciousness re-forms those senses. The senses do not take in external stimulus as it is, it is rather a continuous activity caused by our consciousness. I aim to manifest the visual irony of digital pictures through my work, body topographic map. I will continue to explore the relationship between an identity and a body by delving into how the sensory organisaiton and the identity influence each other.
